DE Draft Prospects

by N Barnett

Dec. 12, 2006

1) Gaines Adams, 6'4" 264 lbs, Clemson

A guy who has excellent quickness off the edge. Struggles against the run but is a very good pass rusher. Plays with alot of aggression and intensity. Plays the "bandit" position which consists of rushing the passer or dropping back into coverage. His skills and size could translate into a being a good DE but his true potential probably lies as a 3-4 LB.

NFL pro comparison: Shawne Merriman

2) Quentin Moses, 6'5" 257 lbs, Georgia

Yet another great DE coming out of Georgia. The Bulldogs have been known over the last few years for producing some of the drafts top defensive talent. Moses is no exception. Struggles against the run because of his smaller size for a DE. Like Adams, Moses's skills and size could translate into a being a good DE but his true potential probably lies as a 3-4 LB. We could be looking at a Shawne Merriman vs. DeMarcus Ware situation like we did in 2005.

NFL pro comparison: DeMarcus Ware

3) LaMarr Woodley, 6'2" 275 lbs, Michigan

Quickly raising his stock, Woodley has been one of the best DEs in college this season. A very talented player, he has the size, speed, and strength to play either DE or LB in the NFL. Solid against the run and the pass, Woodley should be a very good pro at either position and be an impact player for his team.

NFL pro comparison: Terrell Suggs

4) Victor Abiamiri, 6'4" 270 lbs, Notre Dame

A high moter player who excels at stopping the ball in the backfield. Abiamiri has good size, awareness, quickness off the snap, and the speed to get to the QB. He's in the top 10 at Notre Dame for sacks and tackles for a loss. A four down player who will continue to get better and better.

NFL pro comparison: Will Smith

5) Adam Carriker, 6'6" 290 lbs, Nebraska

A big, physical presence on the defensive line. Carriker can play DE in either the 4-3 or 3-4 defense. Has very good strength and ball awareness. Underrated player who is often overlooked. Carriker plays the run and pass very well but doesn't always dominate like he should. Very good speed for a guy his size. Look for him to test out very well at the combine.

NFL pro comparison: Ty Warren

6) Tim Crowder, 6'4" 270 lbs, Texas

A player with very high potential is Tim Crowder. A good size to speed ratio. Crowder plays the run very well and is sometimes uses as a pass rushing DT. A very good athlete. If he could develop his pass rush a bit more he could be a steal for some team. Should go in the early 2nd round.

NFL pro comparison: Justin Smith

7) Anthony Spencer, 6'3" 261 lbs, Purdue

Spencer is a good developmental player who could be used in passing situations early in his career. Shows good potential but could stand to bulk up a bit. A speedy pass rusher who could end up as a LB in a 3-4 defense. Needs more experience but could end being a good player in a few years.

NFL pro comparison: Leonard Little

8) Ray McDonald, 6'3" 280 lbs, Florida

McDonlad is a very experienced player who has the potential to be a very good pro. Good size, his limited speed hurts his pass rushing ablility but helps him against the run. Knee injury might be a cocern as well. Not an elite player but could eventually be a solid starter.

NFL pro comparison: Patrick Kerney

9) Mkristo Bruce, 6'6" 260 lbs, Washington State

No there is not a misspelling in his first name. Bruce is an intriging prospect because of his versitility. A DE in college, he has the skills need to play any of the LB positions in the 3-4 defense. A very good pass rusher, Bruce has a nose for the ball and plays with high intensity.

NFL pro comparison: Joey Porter

10) *Lawrence Jackson, 6'5" 265 lbs, USC

A dominating force, Jackson is quickly becoming one of the top DEs. A 3 year starting, he has continued to get better and becoming more of an impact player. Good atleticism and strength. Jackson is talented enough to go on the 1st day, but he would be wiser to return to school where he could jump into the 1st round next season.

NFL pro comparison: Mathias Kiwanuka

* Underclassmen eligible for 2007 NFL draft
